Laparoscopy in Gynecology

πŸ”΄πŸŸ’πŸ”΄πŸŸ’πŸ”΄πŸŸ’πŸ”΄πŸŸ’πŸ”΄πŸŸ’πŸ”΄πŸŸ’πŸ”΄πŸŸ’πŸ”΄πŸŸ’

πŸ”΄ Many of you might have heard about laparoscopies or had a laparoscopy or two before.

🟒 A laparoscopy is a surgical procedure where a camera is put into your abdomen to enable your surgeon or see your organs on a screen.

πŸ”΄ The camera is usually placed into your belly through a small cut just below your belly button.

🟒 There are several procedures that can be performed with the help of laparoscopy. This procedure is used by surgeons and gynecologists .

πŸ”΄ You might need a laparoscopy just to take a look to see if your abdominal and pelvic organs are ok.

🟒 You might also need a laparoscopy to evaluate pelvic pain, causes of infertility, to diagnose endometriosis ( best way to diagnose this ) , to see how much or if the organs in your abdomen or pelvis are stuck together, to enable your surgeon or obgyn take a look at any growths in your abdomen ( tumors, cysts, etc), or for other surgical procedure like the removal of cysts, fallopian tubes, your womb, etc.

πŸ”΄ You can have a laparoscopic :

πŸ’₯ Myomectomy- removal of fibroids

πŸ’₯ Salpingectomy - removal of fallopian tube(s)

πŸ’₯ Adnexectomy ( Salpingo -oophorectomy )- removal of ovary and fallopian tube tubes

πŸ’₯ Hysterectomy- removal of womb

πŸ’₯ Ovarian cystectomy - removal of an ovarian cyst

πŸ’₯ Adhesiolysis - separating your organs sticking together

πŸ’₯ Chromopertubation - checking to see if your tubes are working

πŸ’₯ etc

🟒 Ectopic pregnancies can also be dealt with surgically via laparoscopy

πŸ”΄ Laparoscopies are usually safe because they are smaller surgical procedures.

🟒 They can however come with some risks like :

πŸ’₯ bleeding

πŸ’₯ infection

πŸ’₯ damage to organs in your abdomen.

πŸ’₯ complications from general anesthesia

πŸ’₯ inflammation of the abdominal wall

πŸ’₯ blood clot formation, which could travel to your pelvis, legs, or lungs and can lead to death ( medication and other measures are usually given to prevent this)

πŸ”΄ If you feel unwell after surgery, you need to let your obgyn know.

🟒 Recovery after surgery is usually very quick, depending on the laparoscopy type you had.

πŸ”΄ Having a laparoscopy in no way means you cannot exercise again in your life. Your obgyn will let you know when you can begin exercising post surgery.

🟒 You should always have in mind what type of laparoscopy you had when giving out your medical history. Its not enough to say you had a laparoscopy.

πŸ’₯ Have you ever had a laparoscopy?
