๐Ÿ›‘ A positive pregnancy test is often followed by the joy of a newborn baby 9 months later. But there are times when pregnancy ends in a loss. A molar pregnancy is one of those.

๐Ÿ›‘ During a healthy pregnancy, the placenta grows inside your womb. It nourishes your baby through the umbilical cord.

๐Ÿ›‘ With a molar pregnancy, tissue in the womb becomes an abnormal mass or tumor instead of a placenta.

๐Ÿ›‘ There are two types of molar pregnancy :

๐Ÿ’ฅ partial molar pregnancy :

both the placenta and embryo (fertilized egg) are abnormal.

๐Ÿ’ฅ complete molar pregnancy :

thereโ€™s an abnormal placenta, but no embryo.

๐Ÿ›‘ Molar pregnancies happen because of problems with the fertilized egg. Its not your fault. You can't do anything about it.

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

Are there any Symptoms :

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

At first, your pregnancy might seem normal. But over time, you may start to notice the following:

๐Ÿ’ฅ Bleeding from your vagina in the first 3 months of pregnancy.

๐Ÿ’ฅ Watery brown discharge

๐Ÿ’ฅ Sacs (they look like clusters of grapes) that pass out of your vagina

๐Ÿ’ฅ Nausea and vomiting that are more frequent or severe than whatโ€™s normal during pregnancy

๐Ÿ’ฅ Lots of pressure or pain in your pelvis

โ—See your obgyn if you have any of these symptoms during pregnancy.

How Is It Diagnosed?

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

๐Ÿ›‘ An ultrasound is done when you report to the hospital. If you have a molar pregnancy, it will be seen during the ultrasound.

๐Ÿ›‘ A hospital pregnancy blood test will be done as well. When youโ€™re pregnant, the level of your pregnancy hormone increases gradually with time, based on how old your pregnancy is . If you have a molar pregnancy, your pregnancy hormone level is often much higher than it should be.

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

Who Is Most at Risk?

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

๐Ÿ›‘ Women younger than 20 or older than 35.

๐Ÿ›‘ Women who have had a molar pregnancy before.

๐Ÿ›‘ Women who have had a pregnancy loss before.

๐Ÿ›‘ Women who have had difficulty conceiving or infertility problems

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

Can Molar Pregnancy be prevented

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

๐Ÿ›‘The only way to be certain you wonโ€™t have a molar pregnancy is not to get pregnant โ—

๐Ÿ›‘ If youโ€™ve had a molar pregnancy in the past, talk to your doctor. Ask him about the chances of it happening again. And find out how youโ€™ll be monitored if you do get pregnant.

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

How can a molar pregnancy be treated

๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘๐Ÿ›‘

๐Ÿ›‘ A D&C can be done. This is often the treatment for pregnancy loss due to any reason. This is the best option for you if you want to get pregnant again.

๐Ÿ›‘ After a D&C, pregnancy hormone levels need to checked several times over the next few months to make sure levels are getting back to normal.

โ—If you donโ€™t want to get pregnant again, then you may consider the removal of your womb.

๐Ÿ›‘ In rare cases, a complete molar pregnancy can lead to a condition called persistent gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) .This means the abnormal tissue grows outside your uterus and into the layer of muscle below it.

โ—A D&C wonโ€™t work because it only removes tissue within the womb . You may need to have a your womb removed or receive chemotherapy to treat persistent GTD.

๐Ÿ›‘ A molar pregnancy can also lead to a cancerous form of GTD called choriocarcinoma. Youโ€™ll need to have chemo to treat it.

๐Ÿ›‘ After a molar pregnancy, it is recommend that you donโ€™t conceive for 1 year. Pregnancy increases pregnancy hormone levels, so it would be hard to know whether the rise in hormones is due to that, abnormal tissue thatโ€™s still in your body, or choriocarcinoma.
